For God's sake forgive me for replying to your letter so late — but I've been wandering between my relatives in various provinces, and it's only today that I found your letter here.

I accept the Directorate's proposal with the greatest of pleasure, but won't you allow me to compile a programme that is not exclusively of my works? This is not false modesty, but I fear that there will be many complaints about an excess of my music, and they might prefer to hear me conduct something, for example, classical. I will not argue — but I suggest this is in your interest, because I'm sure that there are people interested in whether I can pull off a good Beethoven symphony. On the other hand, I'm sure that even many of those who are well disposed towards me would take fright at a concert consisting exclusively of my works. I judge others according to myself. I couldn't bear to listen to a whole evening of works by the same author, even if they are very good ones.

Therefore, let the Directorate decide on this matter and notify me of the decision, addressing the reply to the town of Klin, Moscow province. I'll be home again around 1st September.

Until we meet, dear and most respected Pavel Leontyevich!

Your sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
