Last year, when my opera "The Queen of Spades" was staged in Kiev, I was struck by the extraordinarily beautiful timbre of the voices of the children from Mr Kalishevsky's choir (which sings at Saint Sofiya's Cathedral in Kiev) who took part in the production of the opera [1]. It turned out that this uncommonly beautiful sound was due to the participation in the chorus of the treble Grisha, who is endowed with an extraordinarily beautiful voice. This Grisha is in his way a Kievan celebrity who draws masses of listeners into the cathedral, as well as to the concerts organised by Mr Kalishevsky. Now Mr Kalishevsky writes to tell me that, to the utmost astonishment of all Kiev, the Metropolitan Platon has taken a dislike to this soloist's voice and has ordered that he be expelled. Kalishevsky asks me to try as best as I can to save the poor boy, who has been plunged into despair by the Metropolitan Platon's injunction. But what can I do? It has occurred to me that the Cappella perhaps has need of a soloist, and that you might recruit him for the Imperial Choir. I don't know what Grisha is like now, but last year his voice was amazingly beautiful, and there are no reasons to suppose that it has deteriorated. At any rate Mr Kalishevsky informs me that, on the contrary, his voice is now apparently far better. In the event that it should be possible for you to give the poor boy a place in your choir, allow me to give you Kalishevsky's address: Desiatinny Lane, house No. 10, Yakov Stepanovich Kalishevsky.

I shake your hand warmly, your devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
