Town of Klin, Moscow province

Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me! My brother writes to me that you, although upset by what happened, you have accepted my proposal [1]. I am terribly grateful to you. "The Voyevoda" turned out to be a wholly unsuccessful work and it has been destroyed. Instead I must certainly appear on the platform of the Musical Society with something new, — and since I currently only have a new ballet, then I will select some of the most appropriate numbers for the concert, and score them so that they will be ready for February. Out of the two February concerts, I would much rather prefer the latter, because the more time there is the better; I have a great deal to do. In two weeks' time we'll see each other in Petersburg and discuss everything then.

I embrace you, and thank you once more for not being angry. My deepest respects to your family and to Auer!

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Permit me to postpone the money payment for the copying of the parts of "The Voyevoda" until we meet in person.

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky had been due to conduct his symphonic ballad "The Voyevoda" at a Russian Musical Society concert in Saint Petersburg on 14/26 December 1891. But after conducting the premiere of the work on 6/18 November 1891 in Moscow, Tchaikovsky became highly critical of it, and destroyed the score. The composer's brother Modest asked Peterssen to postpone Tchaikovsky's appearance until February 1892, by which time he would substitute a new work in the place of the symphonic ballad.
