<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Paris, 14, Richepanse. <br />

I was awfully upset to hear from Modya that you are gloomy and miserable . As this would appear to be a result of your peculiar situation on Vasilyevsky Island, then I would seriously advise you to decide to move there. You will then be able to dispose of your time freely, and the eternal sword of Damocles: "supposing he is offended" shall cease to hang over your head . Papa and Tasya will be perfectly satisfied in the knowledge that you are with them, and I am sure that this will be a weight off your shoulders.<br />
<br />
Bob! I hava a huge favour to ask. You should have a family group photograph, taken in Kiev in 1881. You look divinely charming in this picture, and it takes me back to one of the most wonderful times (???) when you were growing up. And so I want to make a 20-fold enlargement of this picture with you. This is hanging in a frame in Miss Eastwood's room at Kamenka, but perhaps Tasya or someone else in Petersburg has a copy too? If not then for God's sake write to Kamenka and order a large copy for me (perhaps with Modya's assistance, if you can't manage it by yourself). This is my idée-fixe .<br />
<br />
I arrived the day before yesterday. I travelled with a sense of anxiety because Pollini insisted that I should stay with him, and I hate not living in a hotel. Fortunately it turned out that one of his house guests had come down with influenza or something of the sort, which meant I could not stay there. I spent the evening with Pollini at the theatre, and dined with him. Yesterday I conducted the sole rehearsal before today's performance . The opera was rehearsed perfectly well and quite nicely produced, but because of the changes to the recitatives necessitated by the German text, I inevitably lost my place and, despite everyone's pleading, I refused to conduct because I was afraid of ruining the whole thing. By the way, the conductor here is not some second-rate fellow, but positively a genius, and he is burning with eagerness to conduct the first performance. Yesterday I heard him conduct an astonishing performance of "Tannhäuser". The singers, the orchestra, Pollini, the stage directors, the conductor (his name is Mahler) are all in love with "Yevgeny Onegin". However, I still doubt that the Hamburg public will be captivated by it immediately. The production has a lot of funny things by way of costumes, scenery, etc. But most comical of all is the dancing of the mazurka in the 4th scene, which defies description. The singer performing Tatyana is very agreeable . The baritone is nothing special. The tenor : likewise. The choruses are good. The orchestra is excellent.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow evening at 11 o'clock I will travel directly to Paris, in order to pass the time pleasantly before going on to Holland . And so I will be in Paris around (I'm being imprecise because I'm not sure about the journey tomorrow) the evening of 22/11 January, and stay there for almost two weeks. I want to try to live there incognito and start revising my sextet . On the 29th and 30th our style I shall conduct in Holland, and on the 31st I shall set off for home! Oh joy, oh happiness!!!<br />
<br />
I will write to you about how the opera went tomorrow or the day after. <br />
<br />
I hug you countless times. Address: Paris, 14, Richepanse. <br />
