I'm very glad that you want to republish the arrangement of "The Tempest" [1]. Ask Eduard to review it, fix everything that's awkward, play it through with Taneyev, and then show it to me; after all, I will be living in Moscow for most of April.

Tell Kleinecke [2] that I am really pleased with his fastidiousness, but that your suspicions concerning excess sharps are absolutely correct [3]. Explain to him (using any scores considered exemplary in fidelity and correctness), that accents (sharps or flats) are never repeated, if the note is connected to the previous tie, and if this is the same note.

It must be thus:

and not:

I shall certainly do the third set of proofs, but there's no hurry with the sextet; the important thing now is "Iolanta" (or "Jolande", according to Simon).

I've received a letter from the Kiev cellist Von Mullert [4]; he asked me to recommend to you his compositions, which he will soon be sending you. He played me them in Kiev. Indeed, I can recommend them — they are very musical things.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
