16 July

I've now received the full scores of Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 from the ballet [1], but not the proofs themselves for these numbers!!! What does this mean? Why the confusion? So of course there will be a delay. I beg you, for God's sake, if Dahlgren [2] has the proofs, take them off him immediately and send them to me!!!!

The proofs of the opening of the ballet, i.e. the overture and the first 2 numbers, are done and I'm sending them tomorrow. It's such a shame that time is being lost! I don't want to start composing because for now I've decided to devote all my time to proofreading, whether it's here or not. They are engraved very well, and if the first proofs can be similarly corrected, then I hope to dispense with the third.

Your telegram made me very happy [3], but now I'm anxious again and don't know if it was a dream.

Proofs, proofs, for God's sake!

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

I'm decidedly perplexed!
