I've been sitting obstinately over the proofs. I think that in three days you'll be receiving the rest of "Iolanta", together with the piano reduction with the mistakes marked. I can't send it any earlier, because I'm correcting errors as I find them. The translator of the text seems to have done the translation very well, but where he had to change the notes, he's unceremoniously put them in my manuscript score such that in places the music doesn't correspond to the Russian text. They've been engraved this way, which significantly complicates my task. By the way, will the German text be in the next edition of the piano reduction? If so, then I'm afraid this may result in misunderstandings of the notes in those places where the German added or removed them. In such cases the notes need to be written with their tails up in the original version, as I had them, and with their tails down in the German one. And at the same time, everything must be very precise and free of errors. I think the veritable Pontus can review it.

If the ballet is to be staged from a written core, isn't it time to start the copying? After all, the beginning of the ballet is now quite ready. I'm afraid that we will be late all the same, and this is oh so undesirable. Who will be doing the copying? Wouldn't it be better if you entrusted the copying to the Petersburg music office? I'm afraid of the Moscow copyists.

I embrace you.

P. Tchaikovsky

P. S. Is Modest really correct? He's sent me an extract from a letter (signed, it seems, by Pavel Ivanovich), which says that it's too late to make corrections now, and this will only be possible in a second edition.
