Aleksandra Menshikova (1840–1902), in the title role of Serov's opera Judith

Russian soprano, actress, and tutor (b. 15/27 June 1840; d. 25 October/7 November 1902 in Saint Petersburg), born Aleksandr Grigoryevna Korobova (Александра Григорьевна Коробова), who appeared on stage under the name Menshikova (Меньшикова).

After studying singing in Saint Petersburg with Federico Ricci, and in France and Italy with Pierre François Wartel, Aleksandra made her operatic debut in Kazan in 1860. She was soon engaged as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and from 1869 to 1880 at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, where she was a member of the Italian Opera company. During the 1870s and 1880s she also gave performances throughout Russia and western Europe, and in 1886 she taught her own singing classes.

On 30 January/11 February 1869, Menshikova premired the role of Marya Vlasyevna in Tchaikovsky's opera The Voyevoda at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Dedications

In 1869, Tchaikovsky dedicated his song Do Not Believe, My Friend — No. 1 of the Six Romances, Op. 6 — "to Aleksandra Grigoryevna Menshikova".

Around this time, he wrote that "I've always been one of the few Muscovites on good terms with her" [1].
