26 January.

My dear Tolichka!

I saw Sasha Gudim today, and he told me various details about you. At the same time he said that you are very interested in my trip to Piter. Firstly, I stayed there (with Mikhayla) in the abominable Hôtel Victoria. Secondly, I went straight to Nápravník, whom I had previously written to arrange a time for us to meet. I decided to charm him by completely agreeing to all his demands, and treating him with courtesy and deference. I achieved this aim brilliantly, and we parted on the most friendly terms. I spent four whole days making cuts and alterations to the score. Most of the time I had dinner at Papa's and I also worked there. No matter how I fled from everyone, they still found me and accosted me in my room. I saw Bessel. The difficulties with the censor have been resolved favourably. Generally speaking, the opera is over and done with; from the second week, there will be daily rehearsals, and I know for certain that Nápravník will bend over backwards.

I've now written a new quartet and will be hearing it in a few days at a soirée at Rubinstein.

I recently spent a whole evening with Fedotova, who seemed to me to be awfully pretentious. She told me that she could not bear me, and that there was no comparison whatsoever between you and me. She speaks about you with the most sublime enthusiasm, and obviously she is in love with you.

Just imagine that Modest left Petersburg at the same time that I left Moscow. It's a repeat of the famous story of the surprises between you and me. Modest stayed here for a week — for some reason not with me, but rather with Shilovsky. The latter intends to commit an awful folly, i.e. to marry; this will be the death of him, all the more since he's marrying a wealthy young girl, who will be very surprised when she finds her husband's reproductive organ to be good for nothing and hopelessly soft, not even capable of rising to the occasion. And she won't care much for his habits either.

We have the Tsar here, and I just saw the court leaving the Kremlin for a theatrical Spectacle gala. Very formal and making a terrible racket.

Dear Tolya, I really want to sleep, but in order not to deviate from my custom of finishing all four pages, I'm writing in capital letters. Farewell [Tolya]], Tolya goodbye, farewell Tolya, write Tolya, goodbye Tolya, regards to Zhedrinsky, Tolya goodbye, farewell Tolya.

Your brother,

P. Tchaikovsky
