Только что приехал в Майданово. Ребёнка благополучно перевёз в Петербург, и теперь он уже водворён у брата Николая. Вчера крестили его, и я был крестным отцом. Мне очень грустно потерять права ''отца'' на этого милейшего мальчика, но нельзя не радоваться, что он в хороших руках.
Je tiens à V[ou]s remercier encore une fois pour la très vive jouissance que V[ou]s m'avez fait éprouver avant hier. Mon admiration, ma sympathie pour Votre beau talent sont maintenant plus vifs, plus intenses que jamais. J'ai beaucoup pensé à V[ou]s ces deux {{sic|dernièrs|derniers}} jours et me permette de V[ou]s communiquer le résultat de mes considérations sur Votre avenir artistique. ''Il faut que vous paraissiez à Votre prochain {{sic|bénefice|bénéfice}} dans un {{sic|role|rôle}} de Shakespeare'', celui de ''Roméo'' ou de ''Hamlet''. Il le faut, parce que le {{sic|repertoire|répertoire}} {{sic|courrant|courant}} ne suffit pas pour que V[ou]s puissiez ''déployer toutes'' les ressources de Votre talent aussi original, aussi {{sic|simpathique|sympathique}} que sérieux et grave. I must thank you once again for the very keen enjoyment which you caused me to experience the day before yesterday. My admiration, my sympathy for your beautiful talent are now more vivid and intense than ever before. I have thought a lot about you these last two days, and I shall take the liberty of telling you what is the outcome of my deliberations regarding your future as an artist. ''It is necessary that at your next benefit performance you should appear in a Shakespearian role'' — that of ''Romeo'', or ''Hamlet''. It is necessary, because the current repertory does not offer sufficient scope for you to ''deploy all'' the resources of your talent, which is as original and appealing as it is earnest and grave. It is only once you have played ''[[Shakespeare]]'' that your talent will be appreciated at its true value.  


However, it is not solely to give you advice (a right which I arrogate to myself arbitrarily) that I am writing to you. It is in order to promise you formally that for your next benefit performance, in the event that you should play ''Hamlet'' or ''Romeo'', I shall write an overture and entr'actes specially tailored to the resources of the orchestra at the ''Mikhaylovsky Theatre''. It will be a great pleasure for me, and I shall be proud to participate a little in your triumph.

Попрошу тебя выслать по почте на имя M[ada]me Bèlard (или ещё точнее M[ada]me Berte Bèlard) 549 франков, которые я е остался должен. На будущей неделе буду в Москве. Пожалуйста, вели приготовить мой счёт. Есть ли ещё у меня что-нибудь за тобой. Я страшно много издержал денег и если у меня за тобой ничего не окажется, должен буду хоть немножко у тебя взять. Если есть письма, пришли, пожалуйста.

Maydanovo

I've only just arrived in Maydanovo. The child was safely transported to Petersburg, and he's now already been placed with brother Nikolay. He was christened yesterday, and I was the godfather. I'm very sorry to lose the paternal rights to this lovely boy, but I can only be glad that he's in good hands.

I would ask you to send 549 francs by post to Madame Bèlard (or more precisely, Madame Berte Bèlard), which I still owe to her. I'll be in Moscow next week. Please, have my accounts prepared. Do I have anything for you? I've spent an awful lot of money, and if I don't have anything to give you, then I'll have to take just a little from you. If there are any letters, please send them.
