Tolya is bringing you the romances, duets, and also the corrected full score and 4-handed arrangement of Romeo, regarding which I have a request for you. Kindly send both to Bote and Bock and ask them to do a new, corrected edition of the overture, both in the form of a full score and parts, and in the form of the arrangement. Of course, I could write to him myself; but, firstly, in view of the fact that Bessel's rights have not been sufficiently clarified, I really don't understand the extent of Bessel's relations with me and Bock, and secondly I should like you to tell Bock that as a consequence of the changes and the shortening at the end, the overture has gained a great deal, and has now become a genuine* chef d'oeuvre (how boastful!); I find it awkward to say this myself. Let Bock have the exclusive rights to the new form of the overture, both for Russia and for abroad. I hope that by clarifying Bessel's rights, or more accurately, wrongs, you can enter into an agreement with Bock and become the proprietor of "Romeo" for Russia. Be that as it may, I fervently wish that the overture in its old form, as well as the 4-handed arrangement, published abominably by Bessel, would disappear, and be replaced by the new, perfected overture. Besides the alterations, I've done the proofing, corrected all the misprints and changed the title. Furthermore, I've inserted the dedication to Balakirev, to whom it was originally dedicated, but for some reason his name didn't appear on the title page of either Bock's or Bessel's editions. I very much wish that Balakirev, at whose instigation I wrote "Romeo", isn't forgotten this time.

Regarding "The Maid", I will say once again that the edition is excellent. But... it still has misprints. Let us suppose there are none of significance, however, I assure you that today I haven't slept all night and walked around all day like a corpse because I found some inaccuracies. To the extent that I was hitherto oblivious to misprints, I've now grown to detest and fear them just as much. Of course, it's now already too late to do another proofreading, because the printing has probably taken place, but won't you at least allow me to append a list of errata to the copies, as they do in books? If it's not too late, then I would be very heartened if you permit me to do this, and append a list of misprints to the printed edition. And do you know how these last misprints came about? Because your engravers, in their carelessness, made new mistakes instead of corrections. In one place I put poco piu f — they turned this into poco riten. f, resulting in nonsense, and in a very conspicuous place. Elsewhere, in the chord: 1573 ex1.jpg I added a ♭ to the middle note, and they've put this on the note below, again producing nonsense. However, I repeat, there are no important mistakes, and in general the edition is splendid. But what about the dedication to Nápravník? This is essential, because I've told him about it. Why have you forgotten him?

I hug you, dear chap.
