Lübeck is a city in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, in northern Germany.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was a free city state, which joined the German Empire in 1871.

Tchaikovsky in Lübeck

Tchaikovsky stayed in Lübeck from 31 December 1887/12 January 1888 to 4/16 January 1888, while preparing for a conducting engagement in the nearby city of Hamburg.

He visited the Stadttheater for a performance of Shakespeare's play Othello (31 December/12 January), and Meyerbeer's opera L'Africaine (1/13 January).
