Magdeburg is the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt), Germany.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the province of Saxony (Sachsen) of the Kingdom of Prussia, becoming part of the German Empire from 1871.

Tchaikovsky in Magdeburg

Tchaikovsky visited Magdeburg from 12/24 to 13/25 January 1888, during his concert tour of Germany: "Magdeburg turned out to be a wonderful, even splendid city" [1].
