Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867, having previously been an autonomous duchy.

Tchaikovsky in Salzburg

The composer stopped briefly at the Hote de Saxe in Salzburg around 25 September/7 October 1892, on his way from Sophie Menter's castle at Itter in the Tyrol to Prague, where he was to conduct his opera The Queen of Spades.

In Letter 4772 to Modest Tchaikovsky, written on 15/27 September, the composer wrote of his intention to visit the birthplace museum of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, known as the Mozarteum, but as he travelled later than intended, it is not known whether he had the opportunity to do so before he had to leave for Prague.
