Sillamäe is a town in the county of Ida-Viru County in the northern part of Estonia, on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was known as Sillamägi (Силламеги), and was part of the Vezenberg district (Везенбергский уезд) in the Estonian province (Эстляндская губерния) of the Russian Empire.
