M[ada]me Brandt,

I can't resist writing to you out of turn today. I'm in Clarens in the Villa Richelieu, in the very room where you stayed with Kolya! It's as if I can see both of you at every moment. Now this makes me sad. Then it was spring, and you were with me! Now it's a harsh winter, there's a mass of snow on the streets and people are riding sleighs, and you're not here! It's all the same: the villa's distinctive smell in the corridor, and Marie, and the dinner just as delicious as before — everything is as it was, except you're not here! This time we have the whole villa completely to ourselves. Madame Brandt, who lived below, has died; the sickly man who lived below has also died, and their spirits haunt the empty rooms. And where are dear Baroness Fecth and he sister? If they appeared today at the table d'hôte, then I think I would cry out with joy. On the other hand, I cannot help but be glad that I came here, because I know it will be so conducive for working.

My sad mood will probably pass tomorrow, and I'll enjoy the peace and quiet just as much as I enjoyed them on the Viale dei Colli! Oh memories — how they are filled with such sweetness, yet at the same time such bitterness!

However, it seems that I'm now speaking poetically. Speaking of poetry. Now matter how proud I am of "Lilies of the Valley, I still don't consider it suitable for publication, and I therefore decline your offer to print them. Moreover, you are mistaken, Modya, in believing that both the "European Herald" and the "Russian Herald" are ready to squabble for the honour of publishing my nonsense. The gradations in the field of art are infinite. I may consider my poem to be excellent, i.e. for someone who isn't a specialist. But is it anything in comparison with, for example, Apukhtin's poems? No. You may spread my poetic glories, trumpet and thunder them — but do not gild the lily.

Write to me in detail about your story. What do you heroes and heroines do? For God's sake, write, and don't lose heart.

And I still haven't managed to write to Kolya. Kiss him on the eyes, his nose, his neck — everywhere.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
