Russian novelist, dramatist, translator, poet, critic and satirist (b. 22 February/6 March 1841 in Moscow; d. 15 August 1926 in Leningrad), born Viktor Petrovich Burenin (Виктор Петрович Буренин).
Tchaikovsky's Settings of Works by Burenin
The libretto for the opera Mazepa (1881-82) was originally compiled by Burenin, based on the narrative poem Poltava (Полтава) (1829) by Aleksandr Pushkin (1799-1837). Tchaikovsky substantially revised Burenin's libretto, which had been compiled previously for Karl Davydov, whose own opera on the subject remained unrealised.
