Volsk (Вольск) is a Russian city on the Volga river, and is the administrative centre of the Volsk district (Вольский район) in Saratov oblast (Саратовская область).

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime the city was the centre of the Volsk district (Вольский уезд) in the Saratov province (Саратовская губерния) of the Russian Empire.

Tchaikovsky passed through Volsk on 23 May/4 June 1887, during his steamship journey down the Volga river.

He noted in his diary that it was a "delightful city" [1].
