This notorious photograph, of unknown provenance, appeared widely in biographies of the composer during the 1990s. However, an expert study conducted by the Department of Forensic Medicine in Moscow and the Tchaikovsky House-Museum in Klin, established beyond doubt that Tchaikovsky was not the man in the photograph; the identity of the latter remains unknown.
