26 мая 1884 г[ода] Каменка Паня-миля! Хорошо ли устроилась ты, душечка моя, довольна ли Скабеевым? Надеюсь, что да. А я продолжаю благополучно, но не особенно приятно существовать, ибо чем дальше, тем больше народу съезжается в Каменку и жизнь делается все более суетливой и недеревенской. К тому же, по обычаю, здесь засуха и гулять очень неинтересно. Вспоминаю я с любовью Подушки но и даже все упрекаю себя, что живя там, не умел как следует ценить и любить чудную местность и вообще столь приятные условия жизни. Паничка, скажи Толе, чтобы он прекратил всякие поиски для меня имения. Я убедился, что не имея в кармане денег, глупо и даже чистое ребячество покупать имение. Даже если б оно и в самом деле стоило 2000 р[ублей], то ведь на устройство его нужно положить ещё, вероятно, столько же, если не вдвое, — а откуда я возьму. Положим, что занять можно, — но делать долги неприятно и жить в имении, купленном на занятые деньги, будет грустно. Итак, я решил сначала сделать сбережения, — собрать несколько тысяч, и тогда уже приняться серьёзно и самому на поиски. Вероятно, я оттого сваливал обуз искания на Толю, что самому страшно было без денег покупать недвижимую собственность. У нас здесь всё благополучно. Саша, слава Богу, здорова, остальные всё тоже, — но засуха убийственно влияет на расположение духа. Дождь наконец был третьего дня, но недостаточно. У вас, я думаю, ландыши только что начинают показываться? Счастливые! Здесь об них уж и позабыли давно. Паничка, пиши мне начиная с первых чисел июня к Модесту. 26 May 1884 Kamenka Panya-Milya! Have you settled in well, my darling; are you content in Skabeyevo? I hope so. I'm still fine here, but it isn't a particularly pleasant existence, because the more it goes on, the more people come to Kamenka, and life becomes more complicated and uncountrylike. Besides, as always, there is a drought here, and walking is very uninteresting. I remember Podushki with love, but I even reproach myself that while living there I didn't have a proper appreciation and love for the wonderful surroundings and the pleasant living conditions in general. Panichka, tell Tolya to stop looking for estates for me. I was convinced that without money in my pocket, it was foolhardy and even pure childishness to buy an estate. Even if it really did cost 2000 rubles, then the same amount, if not twice as much, would probably be needed to make all the arrangements, and where would I find it? Let's suppose that I could borrow it — but entering into debts is unpleasant, and living on an estate bought with borrowed money would be upsetting. Therefore, I've decided to start saving up first, to put by a few thousand, and then I'll start looking seriously and on my own. Probably I put the burden of searching on Tolya because I myself was afraid to buy real estate without any money. Everything is fine here.
