30 January I'm returning to you the copy of the contract with Bessel [1]. Where did Fuchs get the idea that I'm disputing Bessel's rights to "The Oprichnik"? It never crossed my mind. Certainly Bessel displayed his characteristic skulduggery, having connived things so that I signed my name to this ridiculous condition, but I wasn't about to argue the point, and do not intend to. I have a vague notion of re-doing around two-thirds of "The Oprichnik", and then offering the opera in a new form to someone else—but God knows when this might happen. I could say the same about "Romeo and Juliet", but that's also water under the bridge, unfortunately, and I don't see how Fuchs' actions are capable of quickly resolving the matter. Why does nothing come of this? I don't understand. Yours P. Tchaikovsky |
Notes and References
- ↑ Tchaikovsky was replying to Pyotr Jurgenson's letter of 29 January/10 February 1892, in which the publisher reported that the publisher Vasily Bessel was disputing the rights to perform the composer's opera The Oprichnik (1870-72). In 1872 Tchaikovsky had granted Bessel the rights to publish the music and its libretto, but now he was reluctant to allow this old opera to be revived on the stage.
