7 июня 1884 г[ода] Каменка Милый друг Саша! Как ты совершенно верно констатируешь, — я могу лишь ограничиться благодарностью г[оспо]же Скальковской за её готовность петь в «Онегине». Она даже не состоит в труппе, — как же я могу назначить ей роль? С другой стороны, уж если бы дело пошло об экстраординарном исполнении роли Татьяны, то ты знаешь, кого бы я желал видеть олицетворите льницей моего идеала и кто собирался это сделать. Но по всему видно, что это был лишь один разговор, ибо если бы хоть малейшая доля серьёзности была в этих мечтаниях, то ты бы конечно упомянул бы о том в твоём письме. Из имеющихся налицо в труппе певиц я возлагаю большие надежды на Павловскую, которую видел в Москве в Татьяне. Она не идеал, как могла бы быть Панаша, но она высоко даровитая певица, и хотя роль Татьяны не совсем по ней, — но талант берет своё. Я еду завтра к Модесту. У нас здесь в Каменке все благополучно. Радуюсь безмерно улучшению в здоровье Володи. Отчего ты ни слова не написал мне о Леле? Поцелуй его от меня. Тебя обнимаю крепко. Твой, П. Чайковский

7 June 1884 Kamenka My dear Sasha! As you quite rightly state, I can only confine myself to thanking Ms Skalkovskaya for her readiness to sing in "Onegin". She is not even a member of the company, so how can I assign her a role? On the other hand, if it was a matter of an extraordinary performance of the role of Tatyana, then you know there is one person whom I would like to see lionise my ideal, and who is contemplating doing so. But it is clear from everything that this was merely one conversation, for if there had even been the slightest amount of seriousness in these dreams, then you would assuredly have mentioned it in your letter. Of the singers to hand in the company, I have high hopes for Pavlovskaya, whom I saw as Tatyana in Moscow. She might not be as ideal as Panasha, but she is a highly gifted singer, and although the role of Tatyana is not altogether her thing, her talent will carry it. I am going to see Modest tomorrow. We are all well here in Kamenka. I am immeasurably glad that Volodya's health is improving. Why not write a word to me about Lyolya? Kiss him for me. I embrace you warmly. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
