Париж 15/3 дек[абря] 1879 г[ода] Сегодня ночью проснулся от невыносимой боли в зубе и промучился часа три, пока боль не утихла и я снова не заснул. Теперь — как будто ничего и не было. Боль была невыносимая, ужасная — une vraie rage de dents, и, что всего страннее, болел совершенно здоровый цельный зуб. Полагаю, что это явление невралгическое. На дворе теплеет. Уедете ли Вы завтра? У меня к Вам просьба, милый друг. Мне бы хотелось оставить ещё у себя воспоминания Пассек. Когда Вы мне их прислали, я прочёл только вторую половину 2[-го] тома, и лишь вчера принялся за 1-вый, который нахожу удивительно интересным. Не позволите ли мне эти книги оставить до России? Концерт мой готов вчерне, и я им очень доволен, особенно 2-й частью — andante. Теперь примусь за переделку 2-ой симфонии, в которой нетронутой оставлю лишь только одну последнюю часть. С симфонией этой вышел следующий казус. Я отдал её в 1872 г[оду] Бесселю и, в вознаграждение за его хлопоты по постановке «Опричника» не взял с него никакого гонорария, но было условлено, что он напечатает партитуру симфонии. В течение 7 лет он меня обманывал и, постоянно утверждая, что партитура скоро будет готова, даже не приступал к гравировке. Я очень сердился, — но какую услугу он оказал мне своей недобросовестностью! Принявшись теперь за пересмотр симфонии, я нашёл, что в ней рядом с удавшимися вещами имеются такие слабые части, что принял решение первую и 3[-ю] части написать вновь, 2-ую переделать, а последнюю только сократить. Таким образом, если мне удастся поработать в Риме хорошо, у меня выйдет вместо незрелой и посредственной симфонии — хорошая. Вот уж не знаешь, где найдёшь, — где потеряешь. 16/4 дек[абря] 1879 Получил Ваше письмо и бесконечно благодарю Вас, мой милый друг, за все! Сегодня мороз! В самом деле, на этот раз судьба неумолима к Вам! По крайней мере, можно надеяться, что поезд нигде не будет задержан снегом. Как я буду рад, когда узнаю, что Вы у себя в Браилове. От всей души желаю Вам хорошо доехать, мой дорогой друг! Из Рима напишу Вам в Браилов, а Вашего письма буду ожидать уже из России. Paris 15/3 December 1879 Last night I awoke with an unbearable pain in my tooth, and was in agony for three hours until the pain subsided and I fell asleep again. Now, it is as if nothing had happened. The pain was unbearable, an awful — une vraie rage de dents, and, the strangest thing of all is that the pain was in a perfectly healthy tooth. I suppose this is a neuralgic phenomenon. It is warmer outside. Are you leaving tomorrow? I have a request of you, dear friend. I should like to keep Passek's Memoirs for myself. When you sent them to me, I had only read the second half of the 2nd volume, and it was only yesterday that I set about the 1st, which I find remarkably interesting. Won't you allow me to bring these books back to Russia? My concerto is ready in draft, and I am very pleased with it, particularly the 2nd movement — andante. Now I shall set about revising my 2nd symphony, only the last movement of which shall remain intact. A most remarkable thing happened with this symphony. I gave it to Bessel in 1872, as a reward for his efforts in bringing "The Oprichnik" to the stage, without taking any fee from him, but with an agreement that he would print the score of the symphony. Over the course of 7 years he has deceived me and, while constantly claiming that the score would soon be ready, he did not even initiate its engraving. I was furious — but what a service his unscrupulousness did me! Having now begun to review the symphony, I found that alongside the successful things, some parts were so feeble that I have decided to rewrite the first and 3rd movements, to rework the second, and merely shorten the last. Therefore, provided my work in Rome goes well, instead of an immature and mediocre symphony, I shall have a good one. Every cloud has a silver lining. 16/4 December 1879 I have received your letter and am infinitely grateful for everything, my dear friend! There is a frost today! Fate is indeed treating you implacably in this instance! The best one can hope for is that the train will not caught in a snowdrift anywhere. How happy I shall be to learn that you are home at Brailov. My heartfelt wishes for a safe journey, my dear friend! I shall write to you at Brailov from Rome, and will be waiting for your letter from Russia.
