Some time ago you did me honour of inviting me to write something for the celebration day of Saints Cyril and Methodius. This letter, as a consequence of my absence from Russia, reached me much later than it should have done. Since, having received it, I wavered between the desire to do something, or to decisively abstain from the task assigned to me, then I could not give a timely answer. In any case I could not have written more, since time was already short, and besides, the proposal to write ''something'' was much too vague. I would go so far as to remark that if any major work (for example, a cantata or oratorio) is wanted for a performance on a day of celebration, then the composition of an appropriate text ought to have been attended to first of all, such a task being entrusted to one of our outstanding poets, and most importantly, it is necessary to consider all this and order it to be done far earlier, at least a year in advance. | |||

Майданово 8 марта 1885 Милостивые государи!
Несколько времени тому назад Вы удостоили меня приглашением написать что-либо ко дню празднования св[атьях] Кирилла и Мефодия. Письмо, вследствие моего отсутствия из России, дошло до меня гораздо позднее, чем бы следовало. Так как, получив его, я колебался между желанием что-либо сделать или решительным уклонением от возложенной на меня задачи, — то не мог дать своевременный ответ. Во всяком случае ничего большего я не мог написать бы, так как времени было уже мало и к тому же предложение написать что-нибудь было слишком неопределённо. Осмелюсь заметить, что если хотели исполнить ко дню празднования какое-либо крупное произведение (напр[имер] кантату, ораторию), то следовало позаботиться прежде всего о сочинении подходящего текста, каковую задачу нужно было поручить одному из наших выдающихся поэтов, а главное нужно было все это обдумать и поручить сделать гораздо раньше, по крайней мере за год. В настоящее время я могу лишь до некоторой степени оправдать возложенные на меня надежды. Я достал чешский народный гимн в честь св[атьях] Кирилл а и Мефодия; переложил его для большого смешанного хора a cappella (т. е. без сопровождения оркестра) и отдал напечатать г. Юргенсону (музык[альному] издателю в Москве), причём сам перевёл в сокращённом виде текст. Хор этот, исполненный большим количеством хоровых масс, может, если не ошибаюсь, произвести должный эффект в концерте. Имею честь быть всепокорнейший слуга. П. Чайковский |
