Nicola! Je ne pourrai passer chez Vous ce soir, mais comme mon cœur fraternel bat plus fort que jamais, je Vous propose de venir ce soir après le théâtre prendre le thé dans un кабак quelconque? Venez tout bonnement chez Палкин (на углу Литейной) et cherchez moi dans la salle du jardin d'hiver. J'y serais pour sûr.
Я буду смотреть «Ревизора» в новой обстановке. Не будешь ли и ты там? Твой П. Ч. |
Nicola! I won't be able to come to you this evening, but since my fraternal heart beats as strong as ever, I suggest you come this evening after the theatre to take tea in some tavern? Simply come to Palkin's (on Liteynaya Street) [1] and look for me in the hall of the winter garden. I'll be there without fail.
I'll be watching "The Inspector" [2] in a new setting. Won't you be there? Yours P. T. |
Notes and References
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 The restaurant founded by Konstantin Pavlovich Palkin (d. 1886) on Liteyny Prospekt in Saint Petersburg.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 Nikolay Gogol's play Revizor (Ревизор), usually known in English as The Government Inspector or The Inspector General was originally published in 1836, and revised in 1842. Tchaikovsky was not in Saint Petersburg for the new production of the play at the Aleksandrinsky Theatre on 20 April/2 May 1886 marking the fiftieth anniversary of its first publication, but in this letter Tchaikovsky is understood to be discussing the revival of this production in the followings season, which took place on 1/13 October 1887.
