Polish poet, sculptor and ethnographer (b. 15/27 February 1822 in Warsaw; d. 22 January/3 February 1893 in Florence), born Teofil Aleksander Lenartowicz.
Tchaikovsky's Settings of Works by Lenartowicz
Two of Tchaikovsky's songs were set to Russian translations of works by Lenartowicz:
- Was it the Mother Who Bore Me? (Али мать меня роэжала), No. 4 of the Six Romances and Songs, Op. 27 (1875), uses a translation by Lev Mey (1822–1862) of Lenartowicz's ballad Tęsknota (1843), although in the autograph score and most printed editions the original author was erroneously named as Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855).
- The Swallow (Ласточка), No. 15 of the Sixteen Songs for Children, Op. 54 (1881-83), is based on a translation by Ivan Surikov (1841–1880) of Lenartowicz's poem Jaskółka (1853).
