- ↑ This unpublished letter was described on the auctioneer's website as a "note to Mariya Nikolayevna." Among Tchaikovsky's known female correspondents only the actress Mariya Yermolova (1853–1928) and the soprano Mariya Klimentova-Muromtseva (1856–1946) have that name and patronymic. Since Tchaikovsky in this note refers to a promise to come to "listen" to his correspondent (rather than "see"), it presumably must have been addressed to Klimentova-Muromtseva.

Auction, Amherst (New Hampshire), with the following English translation: "I apologize that I could not keep my promise to come to listen to you. I have to spend a few more days working. Forgive me! Believe me, I would love very, very much to come, but the wise thing to do is to sit at home and finish my work on the opera The Enchantress. Kissing your hand, P. Tchaikovsky".
