Monsieur!

Monsieur!

Monsieur Friedrich [1] of Berlin (whom I have not had the honour to know personally) on behalf of the Umělecká beseda [2] has made me a flattering offer to come to Prague for a concert which would be devoted to my compositions, and where I would direct the orchestra myself [3]. I replied to him that I accepted this invitation with great pleasure [4]. Now he writes that the Umělecká beseda has proposed this concert for the first half of December [5].

I have the honour of informing you, Monsieur, that I will gladly come to Prague between 1 and 15 December, and that I will be very pleased to take advantage of this opportunity to make myself known to the public of your city. However, Monsieur, before deciding anything, I should like the Directorate of the Umělecká beseda to give me a direct invitation to come, because, not having the honour of knowing Monsieur Friedrich, and not knowing if the Umělecká beseda has bestowed him with full authority to invite the musicians who will have the honour to take part in his concerts—then I cannot consider the offer he made to me a formal engagement.

Therefore please, Monsieur, let me know presently and most surely whether I am indeed expected in Prague to have the great honour to have my works played under my personal direction [6].

Please accept, Monsieur, the expression of my highest esteem.

P. Tchaikovsky
