Madame!

Notes and References

  1. The autograph was auctioned on 27 November 1990 in Paris. A photocopy of the original was kindly provided by Thierry Bodin of Les Autographes , the manuscript expert consulted when the letter was auctioned.
  2. Pauline Viardot did not fulfil Tchaikovsky's request, as is clear from her reply to this letter, which was published in Russian only and incorrectly dated to 1889 in Письма П. Виардо к русским знакомым (Letters from Pauline Viardot to Russian acquaintances), Советская музыка (1960), No. 8, p. 89-98 (97). We are most grateful to the Turgenev scholar Patrick Waddington for providing this reference.
