Маня! Во избежание путаницы, помните, что я у Вас в среду не завтракаю, но за то обедаю. Помните также, что я Вас в пятницу увожу с собой. Приготовьтесь к этому, т. е. захватите все материалы для Ганслика и Улыбышева, а также не забудьте, что увертюра должна быть готова, дабы мы могли заняться выправкой голосов.

Обнимаю Вас!

Итак, в среду [в] 6 часов сёмга и водка должные уже стоять на столе.

Manya! For the avoidance of confusion, remember that on Wednesday I'm not having lunch with you, but rather dinner. Remember also that I'm taking you with me on Friday. Prepare yourself for this, i.e. bring along everything you need for Hanslick and Ulybyshev [2], and also don't forget that the overture [3] ought to be ready, so we can work on correcting the parts.

I embrace you!

And so, on Friday at 6 o'clock the salmon and vodka should already be laid on the table.

Laroche had been preparing a Russian translation of the German critic Eduard Hanslick's book Vom Musikalisch-Schönen (1854), which would be published by Jurgenson in 1895), as well as writing notes and a foreword to Modest Tchaikovsky's translation of Aleksandr Ulybyshev's three-volume Nouvelle biographie de Mozart (1843).
  3. During August and September 1888 Tchaikovsky had orchestrated Laroche's Overture-Fantasia, which was being prepared for performance in Saint Petersburg under Tchaikovsky's direction.
