Geehrter Herr Berger!

Ergebenst,

P. Tchaikowsky

Leipzig, 1 March 1889

Respected Herr Berger!

Might it be possible in my concert of 8 April to do something else instead of my new symphony?[1] I am not fully satisfied with the instrumentation of the symphony, and should like to alter it in the summer. And because I am so little known in London I am rather afraid to perform with a symphony that is so complicated and difficult. It would be better if you were let me do my first suite! This suite is much simpler, and has always greatly pleased the public. If I am not mistaken this suite has never been performed in London, and so is therefore also a novelty. I shall send it to you, if you wish, so that you can set the programme right away. Sapelnikov will play my first piano concerto in B-flat minor. Ought I to send you the score in advance? Please send a few lines in reply [2].

Address: Berlin W. am Carlsbad, Hermann Wolff.

Until we meet, respected Herr Berger.

Most devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky had scheduled due to conduct his Symphony No. 5, along with the Piano Concerto No. 1 at a Philharmonic Society concert in London on 30 March/11 April 1889.
  2. The composer did ultimately conduct the Suite No. 1 instead of his Fifth Symphony at the London concert, although he never carried out his declared intention of re-orchestrating the symphony.
