Моn cher ami!

Mille choses pour М[ada]me Mackar et salutations a М[onsieu]г Noёl.

Ton, P. Tchaïkovsky

My dear friend!

You ask whether there is anything you can do for me in Paris [1]. There is nothing I want; I shall go to Paris to see my friends and to rest a little from all my weariness. And besides, there is nothing to do in any case, since I have neither the time nor the means. And I have no desire for Angers [2].

I am sorry to be unable to attend the debut of my friend Lefebvre's works [3]. My festival (as the concert where I'm conducting works is called) will take place on Saturday the 9th and on Sunday morning I'm leaving for Hamburg, where I already have rehearsals on Tuesday morning at 12. I shall be coming to Paris probably around 21 March, not before. You would do me a great service by telling no-one than I am coming. Except for a few very close friends, I am visiting nobody, my intention being to enjoy Paris a little, and not to go out into the world every day. I shall stay for a fortnight, no more.

I shall tell you some most curious things about the famous festival in Geneva. That will teach me to accept invitations without first having ascertained the state of affairs. Besides, I have no grounds for complaint, since they were most attentive to me. But if only I had known about the orchestra in Geneva! Oh, my God!!! And after all the first-class orchestras that I had in Germany!!!

Until we meet, my dear friend! A thousand greetings for Madame Mackar, and regards to Monsieur Noêl.

P. Tchaikovsky
