Dear Maestro!

I have just been informed that my overture "Romeo and Juliet" has been played at the Gewandhaus. I am told also that I have savaged by the influential critics in Leipzig. I assure you, dear maestro, that all I want is to be played, and that I have a very philosophical approach to criticism, whether influential or not. They may speak ill of me so much as the want, but I shall ignore them. Now I appreciate the enormous honour of having been played at the Gewandhaus. I send you my most sincere thanks and warmest appreciation.

Please remember me to Madame Reinecke and your daughters, and be sure that I shall never forget the friendly welcome that you and your family afforded me [1].

I am, dear and respected maestro, your devoted servant.

P. Tchaikovsky

P. S. Forgive me for writing in French, but I write so abominably badly in German!!!
