Tchaikovsky in Washington

Tchaikovsky visited Washington from 4/16 to 6/18 May 1891, staying at the Arlington Hotel. "I walked around the city, which is very nice. It abounds in luxuriant spring greenery... We saw the famous obelisk (the tallest structure in the world after the Eiffel Tower); the Capitol, from where one has a wonderful view over Washington, literally drowning in thick, luxuriant foliage of chestnut, acacia, oak and maple trees, then out to the Soldier's House (a magnificent park, surrounding a home for war veterans), through some of the better streets, and finally we returned to the embassy" [1].

On the evening of 5/17 May, he visited the music school to hear a student orchestra play two Beethoven concertos, and left for Philadelphia the next morning.
