Опять предваряю, что пишу не моему товарищу и приятелю, а купцу и издателю.

Вот мои условия.

1) Предложенная тобой плата слишком ничтожна. Я здесь за переписку партитуры заплачу более твоих 100 рублей. Следовательно, попрошу тебя увеличить гонорар по крайней мере вдвое.

2) Ты должен заключить со мной условие, по которому ты будешь обязан под угрозой неустойки напечатать клавираусцуг, партии и партитуру не позже как к 1-го ноября текущего года.

Я понимаю, что тебе, может быть, тяжело будет согласиться на мои условия и что ты затруднишься разом истратить значительную сумму и на гонорар и на печатание. Но что же мне делать? Ведь со всяким другим новым издателем я заключил бы условия для меня гораздо более выгодные, чем с тобой. Не забудь, что ''по закону я имею право'' после 5 лет издавать вновь и у нового издателя мою вещь.

Окончательный ответ ты мне дашь лично при свидании в Петербурге, а я привезу с собой симфонию в новом виде. Я буду в Питере около 1-го марта, а может и раньше.

Спасибо за Кюи и Лядова. Картинки Кюи мне очень нравятся. Не могу сказать того же про Лядова. Ничего нельзя себе представить более пустого по содержанию, как музыка этого композитора. У него много интересных аккордов и гармонических секвенций, — но мысли ни единой, хотя бы самой маленькой. А Кюи молодец. Изящно, просто, поэтично.

Again, I preface that I am not writing to my comrade and friend, but rather to a businessman and publisher.

Here are my terms.

1) The fee you offered is too paltry. I am paying more than 100 rubles here for the score to be copied out. Consequently, I ask you to increase your fee to at least twice the amount.

2) You must conclude terms with me according to which you will be obliged, under threat of a penalty, to print the piano reduction, parts and full score no later than 1st November of the present year.

I understand that perhaps it is difficult to you to agree to my terms and that you will find it difficult to spend a significant amount all at once on both the royalties and printing. But what else can I do? After all, with any other publisher I would have concluded terms that were far more favourable to me than I have with you. Do not forget that after 5 years ''I have the right by law'' to publish my things again with a new publisher.

You will give me your definitive answer in person when we meet in [[Petersburg]], and I will bring the symphony with me in its new form. I shall be in [[Piter]] around 1st March, perhaps even earlier.

Thank you for the [[Cui]] and Lyadov. [[Cui]]'s picture pleased me very much. I cannot say the same about Lyadov. I can imagine nothing as devoid of content as this composer's music. He has many interesting chords and harmonic sequences — but not even the tiniest of ideas. But bravo to [[Cui]]. Elegant, simple, poetic.
