Molchanov graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, where he had studied in Rimsky-Korsakov's class, in 1887. In Odessa he taught first at a music school and then at the city's conservatory. Towards the end of 1892, Molchanov sent Tchaikovsky an orchestral work of his, and the latter promised in his reply that he would perform it at one of the concerts he was due to give in Odessa the following year. At the Russian Musical Society concert in Odessa on 23 January/4 February 1893, Tchaikovsky duly conducted Molchanov's Ukrainian Scherzino.
