26 апр[еля] 1885 г[ода] Майданово Модичка! Только что вернулся из Москвы, где провёл около недели; набралась масса писем, требующих ответа, и потому прости, что пишу опять мало. Дело с «Черевичками» устроилось великолепно. Милейший Всеволожский разрешил колебания здешней Дирекции тем, что приказал поставить «Черевички» с величайшею роскошью, и я присутствовал на заседании под его председательством, где обсуждалась постановка. Вальца (декоратора) командируют в Царское село для воспроизведения Янтарной гостиной и какой-то особенной залы дворца. Я ужасно доволен. Кутёж всё время в Москве был страшный, и деньги летели с безумной спешностью. Вчера праздновалось моё 45-летие. У Толи был обед, а вечером Консерватория давала мне ужин. Между тем Алёша в Майданове устраивал моё новое помещение наверху здесь: и я пишу тебе уже из этого нового помещения. Ничего, недурно, — но в общем Майданово всё-таки мне не особенно симпатично. Твоя комната готова. Она очень милая, но окна и балкон выходят на север, так что солнца мало, зато прохлада будет. Я ужасно рад и доволен, что ты будешь жить у меня. Для Коли тоже готова комната (она у нас так и называется Колина) рядом с твоей, но совершенно отдельная. Очень может быть, что в ней, после или до Коли, будет жить Ларош, ибо их план ехать в Англию не осуществится. В Петербурге я, вероятно, буду в мае, но в точности назначить время приезда ещё не могу. 26 April 1885 Maydanovo Modichka! I've just returned from Moscow, where I spent around a week; a mound of letters has built up requiring replies, and so I'm sorry for not writing much again. The business with "Cherevichki" worked out splendidly. Most dear Vsevolozhsky ended the vacillation of the Directorate there by ordering "Cherevichki" to be staged with the greatest opulence, and I attended the meeting he presided over where the production was discussed. Valts (the designer) has been sent to Tsarskoye Selo to reproduce the Amber room and some particular hall in the palace. I'm awfully pleased. We were boozing in Moscow the whole time, and the money flew away in a mad rush. Yesterday I celebrated my 45th birthday. I had dinner at Tolya's, and in the evening the Conservatory put on a supper for me. Meanwhile, Alyosha was organising my new accommodation upstairs here at Maydanovo, and I'm writing to you from there. It's fine, good enough — but all the same I'm not particularly sympathetic to Maydanovo in general. Your room is ready. It's very nice, but the windows and balcony face north, so there will be little sun, but then it will be cool. I'm awfully glad and pleased that you'll be living with me. A room has been prepared for Kolya (which we've called Kolina), next to yours but entirely separate. It may very well be that Laroche will be staying in it, either before or after Kolya, because their plan to go to England has fallen through. I'll probably be in Petersburg in May, but I still can't set an extact date for my arrival. Hugs, kisses. I've just received a letter from Leva; he's delighted with Tanya and her way of life.
