12 November 1888 Dear Yuliya Petrovna!
Sorry, sorry, sorry. In the two weeks I've spent two here, I literally could not write to you. Besides the commotion of concerts and rehearsals, I even contrived to take ill and spent several days lying in bed. I was with Pogozhev. This is what he told me. Like me, he considers you to have a serious talent; this is also the view of Potekhin, to whom Pogozhev showed your play [1], without disclosing the author. Both have recommended subjecting it to fundamental alterations before bringing it to the committee, i.e. from the later scenes, weaving, as they say, a living thread, to make a genuine comedy. They say that in its current form, the committee will not pass the play. What's to be done now! Send the play to you or give it to, for example, Modest (my brother), for reworking? I'm about to go abroad; On 6th December I'll be in Moscow. Reply to me there. Keep well and forgive me! For God's sake don't be upset! P. Tchaikovsky |
