21 September 1880 I find myself at a loss. For what reason did you send me the full score of the 4th symphony?[1] Did I proofread it or not — I really cannot remember. Do I need to review it and indicate mistakes, or has it already been completely done? If so, then tell me, who did the proofs? Answer me as soon as possible on this matter! Thank you for all your contributions. Yours P. Tchaikovsky Please, intercede concerning the pilgrim![2] |
Notes and References
- ↑ Jurgenson had sent Tchaikovsky a copy of the full score of the Symphony No. 4, which had been published in August 1880.
- ↑ The state censor had objected to the inclusion of an archbishop in Tchaikovsky's opera The Maid of Orleans, and insisted that the part be changed to that of a 'pilgrim' instead. A compromise solution was eventually found, with the archbishop's role being changed to that of a cardinal.
