Tchaikovsky's personal library at Klin includes a volume of poetry by Pyotr Shumakher, entitled My Fellow Countrymen. Satricial Jokes in Verse (Мой земляки. Сатирические шутки в стихах) (Berlin, 1880). Next to the poem An Intricate Case (Мудреный случай) the composer sketched a theme in (A-flat major, 28 bars) [1], which was presumably intended for a song or other vocal setting of the poem (TH 250 ; ČW 510) [2].

There are no other references to this work in Tchaikovsky's letters or diaries.
