Schäffer was the assistant of Tchaikovsky's main German publisher [[Daniel Rahter]], and he corresponded with the composer in the spring of 1889 regarding the proofs of the [[Piano Concerto No. 1]] and the [[String Quartet No. 1]] (though the latter was not subsequently published by [[Rahter]]). After [[Rahter]]'s death in 1891, Schäffer continued to work for the firm, which was now headed by the former's eldest son, Johann Christian Daniel Rather (1873–1925).
