Tchaikovsky in Nice
Tchaikovsky visited Nice on the following occasions:
From | Until | Notes |
---|---|---|
late December 1871/early January 1872 | 22 January/3 February 1872 | Tchaikovsky visited during his Christmas break from the Moscow Conservatory. "The weather in Nice was quite awful; one time the rain was so heavy and the wind so terribly strong that the sea flooded almost the whole of Nice; one of the railway lines fell away, and an entire cliff collapsed and piled onto a large house full of people" [1]. The central section of the piano piece Humoresque—No. 2 of the Two Pieces, Op. 10—includes a folk tune which Tchaikovsky heard during this visit. |
22 January/3 February 1878 | 24 January/5 February 1878 | Accompanied by Modest Tchaikovsky and Nikolay Konradi, while staying mainly at nearby San Remo. |
9/21 March 1881 | 12/24 March 1881 | Tchaikovsky's visit was cut short by news of Nikolay Rubinstein's death in Paris. |
