Берлин 5/17 м[арта] 1880 Провёл день не без приятностей, но минутами и не без скуки. Утром был в «Аквариуме» и остался в совершенном восторге от шимпанзе, который живёт в величайшей дружбе с собачкой. Как они прелестно играли и возились все время; какие он удивительные прыжки делал, как он прелестно смеялся, когда удирал от собачки в такое место, где она его достать не может! Ум его замечателен; с сторожем он обходится совершенно как ребёнок с нянькой. Это доставило мне большое удовольствие. В 12 часов завтракал посредством кофе и пирожков. Потом пошёл в музей. Ты бы его не узнал теперь. Помнишь, в каком беспорядке и с каким отсутствием всякой системы были развешены картины? Теперь система и порядок великолепные. Я убеждаюсь, что сделал значительный шаг вперёд в отношении понимания живописи. Многое мне доставило истинное удовольствие, особенно фламандская школа, — но Теньер, Вуверман, Рюисдаль больше, чем хвалёный Рубенс, у которого даже Христос имеет толстые розовые ляжки и неестественный румянец на щеках. Одно обстоятельство даже заставило меня начать видеть в себе великого знатока. Я узнал кисть Корреджио по его манере прежде, чем увидел его имя в каталоге!!! Каково!!! Впрочем Корреджио, должно быть, был манерный художник, ибо все мужские лица и фигуры напоминают «Христа» в Ватикане, а все женские — «Данаю» н палаццо Боргезе. Статуй не смотрел, — пойду сегодня. В 4 часа был обычный обед, точно такой же, как и всегда; я был не в духе, ибо какой-то господин, сидевший против меня упорно не сводил с меня глаз, и это меня злило и стесняло. Между обедом и театром гулял и познакомился с юношей изумительной красоты, хотя и число немецкой. Предложил в конце прогулки денег и получил отказ. Он делает это из любви к искусству и обожает людей с бородой. Пришлось дать rendez-vous и приходится надуть, ибо оно назначено на завтра, а еду сегодня. «Голландец» мне показался страшно шумным и скучным. Певцы очень плохие, примадонна (Маллингер) без голоса и вообще ниже посредственности. Не дождался даже конца; сходил к Бильзе, потом гулял сделал ещё одно знакомство, ужинал и пил пиво. Berlin 5/17 March 1880 I've spent the day not without pleasant moments, but not without tedious ones. In the morning I was at the "Aquarium", and was absolutely rivetted by the chimpanzee, who lives with a dog as the greatest of friends. How charmingly they played and toyed with each other the whole time; what amazing jumps he made, how charmingly he laughed when he ran away from the dog to a place where she couldn't reach him! He has a remarkable mind. He behaves towards the keeper exactly as a child behaves towards a nanny. This provided me with great entertainment. At 12 o'clock I had lunch with coffee and pastries. Then I went to the museum. You wouldn't recognise it now. Do you remember the disorderly and unsystematic way in which the pictures were hung? Now the system and order are excellent. I'm convinced that I've made significant progress in respect of my understanding painting. Much of it has given me genuine pleasure, particularly the Flemish School, but Teniers, Wouwerman and Ruisdael are superior to the vaunted Rubens, whose Christ even has thick pink thighs and unnaturally rosy cheeks. There's one thing that even made me begin to see myself as a great expert. I recognised Correggio's brush from his style before I saw his name in the catalogue!!! How about that!!! Anyway, Correggio must have been a distinctive artist, because all the male faces and figures resemble Christ in the Vatican, and all the female ones Danae in the Palazzo Borghese. I haven't looked at the statues — I'm going today. At 4 o'clock there was the customary dinner, exactly the same as always; I wasn't in the mood, because some gentleman seated opposite me persisted in staring at me, which made me angry and embarrassed. Between dinner and the theatre I walked and made the acquaintance of an astoundingly beautiful young man, although he was a German. At the end of the walk money was offered and refused. He does it for the love of art, and adores people with beards. I was obliged to arrange a rendez-vous, and had to cheat him, because it's set for tomorrow and I'm leaving today. "The Dutchman" seemed to me to be terribly noisy and tedious. The singers are very poor, the prima donna (Mallinger) has no voice and is generally beneath mediocrity. I didn't even wait for the end; I went to see Bilse, then I walked, made one more acquaintance, had supper and drank beer. I kiss and hug you, Kolya and Aleksey. Yours P. Tchaikovsky
