17th June

Dear friend!

The proofs of the 3rd act, done very meticulously, are ready, but I'm afraid to send them by parcel post, and since registered letters are sent from here only once a week, on a Thursday, then it will be necessary to wait another 2 days before sending the proofs.

I should like to receive the proofs of the 4th act soon, and then, having sent them back to you, I'll await a complete copy of the entire opera, which I'll once again correct as carefully as possible, and then I'll rely upon you to insist that the engravers correct every mistake. Nápravník has asked that the opera be ready by 1st August, and I fervently hope that this can be done, but when the opera does come out I really don't want this to be before it's produced. What do you think about this? Let the critics abuse and vilify the opera when it makes it to the stage, and when the piano reduction has become merely a photographic image of what has been heard on the stage. I'm not afraid of being prematurely abused myself, but I am afraid that the abusers (who will undoubtedly exist) will turn the public against the opera before it appears on the stage. After all, there is already a preconception that I don't know how to write operas, and a surprise is required in order to dispel this prejudice, i.e. the success of the opera on the stage, which I'm strongly counting on, provided that the audience doesn't come to the theatre in an antipathetic disposition, based upon pre-production articles about the opera. Thus, when the proofs are completely ready, it will be necessary to print several copies for the directorate, and then the plates can be put aside until the production, which will be happening in the winter.

I'm staying here until 30 June; on that date I'm going to stay at Brailov, Mrs Meck's estate, where every year I spend several weeks in complete solitude, although this fact remains a secret, and last year letters were sent on to me there from Kamenka. But now, in order to facilitate correspondence, I ask you, from the end of June, to send letters and proofs to me at the following address: Odessa railway line, Zhmervka Station, thence to Brailov, Mrs Von Meck's house, for P. I. T.. However, I don't want anyone besides you to know anything about this. I'll be staying there for three weeks. For God's sake, hurry up with the fourth act.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
