I'm now sending you the concerto and the "Capriccio", and I want to ask not only for the concerto, as I wrote yesterday, but also for the "Capriccio" to be sent for reviewing one more time, together with the current prints. Both have been engraved well, but there are not a few mistakes, and extremely gross ones. Direct your engravers' attention to the fact that they are extremely careless regarding the markings, i.e. f, p, ff, pp, sf, etc. Also, for example, instrument indications, such as: Fl., Ob., Cl., Fag., Cor., and the like, are completely missing, even though they are all over the manuscript. sf has been continually replaced by ff, which has a quite different meaning; also, Ped. hasn't been put in everywhere; well, in short, there's been a great deal of carelessness in this respect, but it is really very important. It's Messer's responsibility to check the manuscript to see whether everything has been done the way I did it; instead this idiot and son of a bitch gives himself licence to correct and edit my harmonies in his own way ("Capriccio", p. 15), resulting in nonsense instead of sensible modulations. To hell with all this! What, ultimately, is he proofreading? Henceforth I refuse anyone else's proofs. It's better that I do everything myself; this shouldn't take much longer, because, I really think the delay is in his first proofreading. I'm not even talking about the fact that he is so unmusical that instead of corrections he introduces new mistakes, but at least he should be comparing my manuscript to the prints, and he doesn't! I feel terribly resentful towards him.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
