Dear friend! I've enrolled one talented young man in the School of Painting and Sculpture; the manager at Kamenka, Nikolay Vasilyevich Davydov, will pay for his teaching and upkeep, but I can't take the money off him until the cost of all this has been determined. Meanwhile, Tolya, who has been entrusted with the arrangements in this matter, is likely in the short term to encounter difficulties with the various payments that the situation requires. I've told him to turn to you if the need arises; please, extend him a little credit. When I receive the money from Davydov I'll send it to Tolya, and he'll give it to you.

The "Capriccio" and the concerto have been sent off to you. I can vouch for the first, but not the second, and since I want terribly for the edition to be impeccable, then I ask you to arrange for Taneyev or even Nikolay Grigoryevich to play it through. If in their eyes there are no misprints, then this means my proofreading is flawless. Let anything they find be noted, and then, together with my new amendments, all this should be given to the engravers, with instructions to correct — and our youngest child shall be born into the world.

I'm looking forward to your answer about whether the full score and parts of the "Capriccio" are being engraved?

I embrace you.

P. Tchaikovsky

Taneyev has asked for "The Maid". Yes, of course.
