Каменка 9 окт[ября] Получил твоё петербургское письмо. Спасибо за хлопоты по поводу моих бессельских дел. Скажу тебе, что Бессель мне так гадок и мерзок, что я с своей стороны решительно не способен вести с ним какие бы то ни было дела. Одно воспоминание о нем приводит меня в нервное расстройство. Что же будет, если я вступлю с ним в письменные пререкания или разговоры? Поэтому я решил плюнуть на него и раз навсегда отказаться от всяких с ним сношений. Он для меня отныне не существует вовсе. Но тебе предоставляю, в силу доверенности, действовать как тебе угодно, хотя советовал бы поступить подобно мне, т. е. махнуть рукой. Поверь, что он когда-нибудь лопнет и придёт просить тебя купить мои вещи, ему принадлежащие. Плюнь и жди! К Направнику писать о неисполнении не могу. Дело в том, что ещё перед прошлым сезоном великий князь потребовал, чтобы 2-я симф[ония] была включена в программу, о чём мне сообщил Направник при свидании. Я, имевши тогда в виду переделку, просил отложить до будущего сезона. Когда я весной обедал у Вел[икого] кн[язя], он спрашивал о ней; очень интересовался её новым видом и ещё раз при мне сказал Напр[авниик] чтобы она была включена в программу. Ведь вел[икому] кн[язю] нет никакого дела до моих пререканий с Бесселем, и ему совершенно все равно, по писанным или печатным нотам она играется. Будет очень неловко, если я теперь буду просить, чтобы симф[онию] не играли. Что касается копии, то благодаря той безумной доверчивости, с которой я так преждевременно отдал этому подлецу мою рукопись, теперь её иначе нельзя будет достать, как хитростью. Если ты найдёшь способ добыть её, то тем лучше. Вообще, повторяю ещё раз, предоставляю тебе действовать как найдёшь нужным. Но «Ромео» я бы попросил тебя послать к Боку в скорейшем времени. Никогда не прощу себе той непростительной пошлости, глупости, слабости, дрянности и даже подлости, которые я проявил в моих отношениях к Бесселю. Твой П. Чайковский

Kamenka 9 October I've received your Petersburg letter. Thanks for your troubles regarding my business with Bessel. I tell you that Bessel is so vile and disgusting to me that I'm utterly incapable of conducting any business with him on my own account. The merest recollection of him makes me unwell. What would happen if I were to engage in disputes with him in writing or conversation? Therefore I've decided he can go to hell, and I disavow all relations with him once and for all. Henceforth he does not exist for me at all. But I give you leave, by virtue of power of attorney, to act as you see fit, although I would advise you to do as I do, i.e. give up. Just believe that one day he'll go bust and come begging you to buy the things of mine that he owns. Spit and wait! I cannot write to Nápravník about a non-performance. The fact is that even before last season the Grand Duke demanded that the 2nd Symphony be included in the programme, as Nápravník told me when we met. With the revision in mind, I asked then for it to be postponed until the next season. When I dined with the Grand Duke in the spring, he enquired about it; he was very interested in its new form, and once again, in my presence, he told Nápravník that it was to be included in the programme. After all, the Grand Duke has nothing to do with my quarrels with Bessel, and he is utterly indifferent as to whether it's played from written or printed notes. It will be very awkward if I now ask for the symphony not to be played. As for a copy, thanks to the reckless gullibility with which I so prematurely gave my manuscript to this scoundrel, it will only now be possible to obtain it by cunning. If you can find a way to extract it, then so much the better. In general I repeat once again, I leave it to you to act as you consider necessary. But I would ask you to send "Romeo" to Bock as soon as possible.
