I ought to have written ages ago to thank you, most kind fellow, for visiting my Aleksey. But I've now become even more parsimonious with letters. The only time I can write them is in the evening, and I noticed that if, after the terribly late dinners here, I overcome my laziness and write letters, then I have an atrocious night's sleep, and the next day I'm no good to anyone. Therefore, I have decided to write only when I have cause, and then only briefly. Forgive me golubchik for repaying your letters, which are so interesting and filled with content, so meagrely. But what's to be done! Every available hour of the day must be devoted to the opera, which is progressing awfully slowly. However, I'm very satisfied with my child's difficult birth. The cold here is unimaginable. I received the notepaper from Osip Ivanovich yesterday, and a parcel with the score from you. I saw yesterday's popular demonstrations from afar.

For a while now I've been haunted by the unsettling thought that, having abandoned that unfortunate person, supposedly tied to me by the bonds of matrimony, to the mercy of fate, perhaps I have not behaved at all well. Now this idea worries me more and more often. If this person is in need, if she's abandoned by her lover (which is highly likely) and has nowhere to lay her head, then I ought to come to her aid. And so I want to ask you to find that gentlemen, whom you have previously used to investigate her, and instruct him to seek her out again and ascertain whether she requires material assistance? If so, then you must surely give her money. Forgive me for abusing your friendship.

The weather has been awful here for many days: snow, blizzards, cold and a piercing wind. And all is not well within me either; I'm in a foul mood. I'm sleeping badly and my aptitude for work is limited more than ever; consequently, I can only write in the smallest of portions.

1st/13 March

The time has come to finally finish this page. I have nothing much of interest to report. I recently saw in the window of a music store "Tableaux du Nord" par P. Tschaikowsky. It turned out to be Bernard's pieces from "Nouvelliste". Is this a reprint, or did Bernard give the publisher the rights? Saint-Saëns has received 60 thousand francs for an opera. Will we ever reach the point where I am worthy of such a price, and you will be in a position to pay it? If we live for another 70 or 80 years then perhaps it will come to that. The opera is highly praised. I embrace you.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
