Tomorrow, the 29th, I'm sending you by express delivery the following parts of "Mazepa".

1) The reworking of the end of the 7th and start of the 8th numbers from Act I, in short, where I divided this first act into 2 scenes. It's a small change, with just a few bars done differently. All these changes need to be made in the piano reduction, and for this purpose I've written a special leaf, which I've stuck into the full score.

2) The libretto of the opera "Mazepa", in the form in which it should be printed.

3) The whole of the 2nd act, which is divided into three scenes. The piano arrangement is written at the bottom of the score itself. There was no room for it in the 3rd scene, and the arrangement has been done separately; moreover, the voice parts haven't been written in, but space has just been left for them. Therefore, the whole of my opera "Mazepa" is finished, and everything is with you. I sat over it for two years, and it cost me much effort. I entrust its future fate to you.

I haven't yet received the money, but an official from the bank has already been and will be coming again tomorrow, because he didn't catch me today. I can say nothing besides thank you. I'm awfully ashamed before you; I understand that it's not an easy thing to lay out almost 200 rubles at once. But know one thing: my God I'm not to blame, it's an emergency.

I am a lost cause, for whom nothing can be done. Hopefully I'll finally leave here on the 6th or 7th.

I embrace you.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
