25 сент[ября] 1885 с[ело] Майданово Душечка моя Паня! Сейчас получил твою телеграмму и до крайности был ею обрадован. Я постоянно, все эти дни, воображал тебе всё ещё едущей, тогда как я тут уж давно наслаждаюсь полным спокойствием, — и часто со страхом и грустью думал о том, что ты устала, что Тата утомлена длинным путём и т. д. Так приятно знать, что вы уже на месте. А я покамест очень доволен своим домиком; понемножку мы все приводим его в более красивый и уютный вид, и я думаю, что [ты] бы очень была довольна, если бы теперь вошла в мой кабинет. Он такой миленький, что выходить из него не хочется. Столовая, которая нам всем так нравилась, оказывается далеко не такой привлекательной. Во 1-х, рядом буфет, и я слышу все, что говорят люди, неся мне кушанья и моя посуду — а я этого не люблю. Во 2-х, в ней чем-то дурно пахнет, и, наконец, там постоянно бегают мыши, — положим, маленькие и не особенно противные, но все же это неприятно. Однако ж всё-таки я совершенно доволен своим устройством. Алексеи сделался шёлковый; ты бы просто не узнала его, и не можешь себе представить, как он бывает мил, когда с него сходит несносное ворчальное настроение. С Аришей, к моему удивлению, они очень дружат. Василий в это лето сделал необычайные успехи, и я лучшего ничего не желаю, как его стряпню. Новичихи все ещё нет; получил от неё необыкновенно безалаберное письмо, из которого понял только, что нужно дать Прасковье Ивановне 35 р[ублей]. С трудом выпросил у Алексея эти деньги (у меня ни копейки нет). Приедет она через неделю. Гостил у меня 2 дня Ларош; минутами был очень приятен, но нервы его страшно расстроены, бессонница страшная, и я положительно начинаю бояться за него. Иногда он точно сумасшедший. В эту субботу, 28-го, у меня будут Губерты и Юргенсон. Вчера всё Майданово ликовало; из Волоколамска принесли чудотворную деревянную статую Николая Чудотворца; она и у меня была, и служили молебен с акафистом. Жду с невероятным нетерпением более подробных известий о первых тифлисских впечатлениях. Целую ручки крепко, крепко. Твой П. Чайковский Конечно, Толю и Тату целую и всем кланяюсь.

25 September 1885 Maydanovo village My darling Panya! I've just received your telegram and was extremely gladdened by it. I have constantly, all these last few days, imagined you still travelling, while I have been enjoying complete peace here for ages — and often thought with fear and sadness that you were weary, that Tata was worn out from the long journey, etc. So it is nice to know that you are already there. And for now I'm very content with my little house; we're gradually making it look more beautiful and comfortable, and I think that you would be very pleased if you came into my office now. It's so lovely that you won't want to leave it. The dining room that we all liked turns out to be far from alluring. Firstly, the kitchen is nearby, and I can hear everything that people say when bringing me food and washing dishes — and I do not like this. Secondly, it has a rather bad smell, and finally, there are mice continually running around there; let us suppose these are minor things and not particularly horrid, but still unpleasant. All the same, I'm still utterly content with my arrangement. Aleksey has become as soft as silk; you simply wouldn't recognise him, and you cannot imagine how sweet he is when his unbearably grumpy mood has passed. To my surprise, he and Arisha are very friendly. Vasily has made extraordinary progress this summer, and I could wish for nothing better than his cooking. Novichikha still isn't here; I received an unusually scrappy letter from her, from which I understood only that I needed to give Praskovya Ivanovna 35 rubles. With difficult I obtained this money from Aleksey (I don't have a kopek). She will be arriving next week. I had Laroche as a guest for 2 days; at times he was very pleasant, but his nerves were terribly upset, he had terrible insomnia, and I was positively starting to fear for him. Sometimes he's simply a madman. This Saturday, the 28th, I'm having the Huberts and Jurgenson over. Yesterday the whole of Maydanovo was rejoicing; a miraculous wooden statue of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was brought from Volokolamsk; it came here too, and they held a prayer service with an akathist.
